The Mothers Touch

Birth is a sacred act and within this sacred act there are many connections that are made between mother and baby that can affect the child and mother for life. The first touch between a mother and her newborn is an incredibly powerful exchange of energy that transcends the physical. It is the moment where two souls reconnect after their journey together through the veil. When a mother is the first to hold her baby, it initiates a profound bond rooted in love, protection, and spiritual alignment. This touch carries the wisdom of ancestors, the nurturing force of the divine feminine, and the heartbeat of creation itself.

In that first embrace, the mother’s energy imprints upon the child, grounding them in safety, trust, and belonging. It is as if the mother’s essence whispers to the baby’s soul: You are home. You are loved. You are safe. This connection creates an energetic thread that weaves mother and child together, deepening their spiritual bond and ensuring the child’s gentle welcome into the world.

However, this sacred bond can be disrupted in medicalized birth practices, where midwives or OBs are often the first to touch the baby. While their role is essential for ensuring physical safety, their intervention in these moments is often unnecessary and can break the natural flow of this sacred imprinting.

A highly invasive practice in medicated births, like the yoni exam or cervical sweep, can further interfere. When midwives manually try to stretch the cervix or break the waters to accelerate labor, it places the child under stress, and the first touch may occur before the baby is ready. This disruption robs both mother and child of the opportunity for an undisturbed, peaceful connection. Mothers should be aware of these interventions and feel empowered to decline practices that go against the natural birth process.

Allowing the mother to be the first to touch her baby honors the ancient wisdom that birth is a sacred rite of passage, not a mere medical procedure. It reinforces the mother’s divine role and ensures that the energy exchanged in those first moments lays a foundation of trust, love, and spiritual harmony. It reminds us that in birth, as in life, the soul’s journey begins with love.
