Holistic View on Postnatal Depression

One in every seven women who give birth in Australia has suffered from postnatal depression. This is a significant amount of newborn mothers that are having difficulty in connecting with their babies and with themselves.

Postpartum mood disorders or "PPMDs" include baby blues, worry, anxiety, compulsiveness, obsessive thoughts, postnatal depression, and anxiety.

From the Ayurvedic understanding, this is caused by an excess of air and ether elements in the body. When the baby comes out of the body, there is so much empty space that can naturally make mom feel unsupported, empty, and can cause anxiety, and mental imbalances.

Mental states tend to respond very quickly to physical support like diet, lifestyle, herbal remedies, and loving touch.

Ayurveda recognizes that Postnatal care is so profound. It takes mom to a state of nurturance and nourishment.

It is a moment for her body to heal and for her heart to be fully connected with her baby. During this time, mom's physiology is as delicate as her newborn's. Therefore she should honor this opportunity to allow her body to heal in a way that will leave her stronger than ever.

The six weeks following birth are one of the most critical times for both mom and baby. Ayurveda considers this time to be precious in a mother's life.

Giving birth is a transformative and life-changing experience that mom has to live. Which is why having the right birth team and the right people by the mother's side will make a big difference for her healing journey.

There is a need for much support on all levels after birth.

Mother Nature's desire, we feel, is for mama to feel connected from heart to heart with her baby and offer her best service.

Daily postnatal practices help maternal-infant bonding, lactation, digestion, and elimination, mood, and hormone balance.

If a woman feels supported and safe during the labor and during the postpartum period, the outcomes of recovery will be much smoother and faster.
